Why Most Startups Don’t Die — They Drift

Startups rarely fail in a single moment.
They fade.

Drift is gradual, polite, and easily rationalised.

What Drift Looks Like

  • Metrics stagnate but don’t collapse
  • Teams stay busy without progress
  • Vision slides into slogans
  • Founders stay hopeful instead of decisive

Nothing is obviously broken—so nothing is fixed.

Why Drift Is So Dangerous

Drift consumes:

  • Time
  • Energy
  • Attention
  • Optionality

By the time failure is acknowledged, leverage is gone.

The Drift Triggers

Drift often begins when:

  • Hard questions are deferred
  • Strategy is replaced with activity
  • Comfort replaces ambition
  • Survival becomes the implicit goal

Founders stop choosing—and start accommodating.

The Antidote

Drift ends with decisions, not effort.

Ask:

  • What are we no longer willing to tolerate?
  • What are we continuing out of habit?
  • What would we stop today if starting fresh?

Clarity is uncomfortable—but curative.

A company does not need more time.
It needs a choice.
